Gekayla Flournoy, Successful 3rd Grader
Not the Same Old Way of Learning Fundamentals
It is foolish to do the same thing, the same way, but expect
a different result. That is why Florida insists that students
who are retained get individual attention and help geared toward
their specific needs. Students who repeat a grade often need
special assistance and a tailored curriculum to help them catch
up to their peers.
Gekayla Flournoy once struggled in reading due to gaps in her
educational opportunities. Her attendance was poor and she did
not have a lot of support at home. When she was unable to demonstrate
she could read, Gekayla was retained.
North Shore Elementary instituted several changes to their learning
environment for retained students. They have an extended learning teacher
who focuses on fluency strategies with students individually. They brought
in a retired teacher who is a classroom volunteer and provided students
with individual assistance. Through the Adopt-A- Friend program, Gekayla’s
class read to elders who became adopted grandparents.
Gekayla’s study habits have now improved, and she has made
significant gains in her reading fluency and comprehension. Enabling
Gekayla to read has helped her to start learning. Her confidence
has grown and she now has a motivation to succeed. All she needed
was a little time, and a new way of learning. She found that
at North Shore Elementary.
