Learning Tool Helps Student Overcome
Language Barrier and Improve Performance
Raquel Rivera’s parents decided to move from Ecuador to
the United States to provide their children with the best education
available. With high hopes, Raquel entered the classroom speaking
little English and having trouble reading. She worked very hard
in her ESOL classes and in three years time she was able to go
from beginning to advanced.
Raquel has a maintained a good grade point average, but when it
came time to take the FCAT her struggles in reading were apparent.
Despite her challenges, Raquel was determined to succeed. She began
practicing with the FCAT Explorer and used the internet to practice
and improve her academic skills.
After some hard work, Raquel was able to improve her FCAT scores
improving from a Level 1 in reading to Level 2 and from a Level
2 in Math to a Level 3. Although she has come a long way, Raquel
knows her work is not finished and continues to practice on FCAT
Explorer. She has also begun teaching her sisters how to take advantage
of the learning tool.
