Machrisna Betts, Successful 3rd Grader
Success Leads to Confidence
When students struggle, adults have a choice. They can ignore
the problem, with the excuse of not “hurting a child’s
self esteem” – or they can do something about it.
All children can learn, and we must find a way to help them do
just that.
Machrisna Betts was a struggling student, who was retained in
the third grade. She scored a level 1 on the FCAT and was unable
to demonstrate that she could read at a basic level. This year,
she entered computer assisted remediation programs at George
S. Hallmark Elementary. Machrisna also participated in a special
after school academic program.
Both her principal and teacher have noticed an improvement in
Machrisna’s quality of work. More importantly, they have
seen an increase in her confidence. The maturity and confidence
Machrisna has gained have allowed her to focus. She is reading
more and volunteering to read in class. Her writing skills have
also continued to improve.
Once a struggling student, Machrisna is now a leader. Nothing
is better for a child’s self esteem than achievement.
