After Attending Reading Camp and
Earning Good Cause Promotion, Continued Remediation Leads to Success
Chase Mercer is currently a fourth grade student at Waller Elementary
School. In 2003, Chase scored a Level 1 in Reading and a Level
3 in Mathematics on the FCAT. He scored in the 30th percentile
on the Norm Reference Reading Test and in the 61st percentile on
the Norm Reference Math Test.
Chase was slated for retention, but like all struggling third
graders, had the opportunity to attend Summer Reading Camp at Waller.
Through hard work, his reading skills improved during the intensive
six-week program and at the end of it, he was able to surpass the
51st percentile on the Norm Referenced Test 9 and be promoted to
fourth grade.
During the 2003-2004 school year Chase was targeted to attend
a pull out REACH program (Retrieving and Enhancing Academic Choices)
for “At Risk” fourth graders. This small group class
meets daily for thirty minutes and focuses on phonemic awareness,
phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
Chase has continued to make progress. Chase’s 2004 Norm-Referenced
scores show significant gains to the 70th percentile in Reading
and 89th percentile in Math. Chase even celebrated an FCAT Writing
score of 3.5 this year, which is right in line with the district
average!
Chase has shown improvement in all academic areas during this
school year. He is enthusiastic about school, enjoys reading, loves
to write and is more focused on academic accomplishments. Chase
is proof positive that summer reading camps can get struggling
readers on the right path. |
