Description of the 2002 FCAT Writing Prompts

GRADE 4

Writing to Explain (Expository)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to explain why they would choose a particular person to be the teacher for a day.

Writing to Tell a Story (Narrative)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to write a story about what might happen if a famous person came to visit.

GRADE 8

Writing to Explain (Expository)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to explain why a particular character is their favorite.

Writing to Persuade (Persuasive)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to convince the reader to accept their opinion about whether or not teenagers should be given jobs or chores around the house.

GRADE 10

Writing to Explain (Expository)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to choose an item and explain how that item describes something about them.

Writing to Persuade (Persuasive)
Students responded to a prompt that directed them to convince the reader to accept their opinion about whether or not it would be helpful for students to have free time during the school day..
